View from the Opposition - Arsenal - Now with Q&A - Gonzo post match reply
Welcome to Gonzo Gunner, a 63-year-old property developer from Highgate, and attended his first Arsenal game when he was 3.

Does Willie Young still have nightmares about a 16-year-old lad accelerating away from him and then wake up kicking his Missus to pieces?
Duffster

I was actually at the game with my dad and brother. We didn’t have a clear view of it when it happened but watching it later on match of the day my dad was furious. “Mugging a teenager in front of the world, making us look like a bunch of cunts, the ginger fucker needs shooting”. It’s funny, my dad only ever swore when he was talking/shouting about football

Do you know of any Arsenal fans that have been to Rwanda since the £30m sponsorship deal started?
Mr Kenzo

Not personally but I know of a couple trips being arranged to help build schools and wells. For me it was a cynical attempt to sell more shirts.

Does your wife/life partner buy you an annual subscription to The Guardian or the New Statesman for Christmas?
Hermit Road

Last Christmas she got me a new drill. Though the Guardian is my choice of newspaper.

You might be the only team in the division with a more abysmal injury record than us over the last decade or so.
What do you think is the main reason behind it? Bad luck, buying players made of glass, or training related?
El Scorchio

A combination of the three. Possibly changes in the training methods.

How do you rate your season so far?

Underwhelming to say the least. The board need to understand that we don’t have a divine right to CL every season.

We lack ambition and have been more than happy to come 4th every year. And this complacency has left us mid-table worrying what the score between Villa and Palace is going to be.
Ozil’s cuntish behaviour and the inability of our legal people to get us out of pissing millions up the wall doesn't help matters.

Do you think now would be a good time to head back south of the river where you'd be a big team again?
Alwaysaniron

I’d love to. Highbury, like Upton Park, could be like a cauldron. It’s more of a corporate day out feel to it now. You're advised to get three quotes for a hot dog since we moved.

Do you, much like us, regret moving to a new ground and has Ashburton Grove been a hindrance to your clubs progress rather than enhance your ability to compete at the highest level?

See above. But no, I believe we’ll be challenging for the top 6 again next season.

Pub Bigot
What do make of West Ham as a team.

Well, I mentioned the 80 FA cup final. After that game my younger brother switched allegiance and formed some kind of boy crush on Alan Devonshire. Dad went ape shit and ripped his junior season ticket up in front of him.

The next 5 years was me and Joe battling for wall space in our bedroom for posters. For my 21st Birthday he bought me a West Ham kit with a card saying “Time to become a Man”.

When we play each other of course I want to stuff you and Joe, but otherwise I always look out for your result and am pleased if you’ve won. I’m a big fan of Rice. A year or so away being truly world class.

Arteta - he's fucking clueless isn't he?
Vexed

He sometime does his best to appear that way. The jury is still out, tbh.

Are you just a little embarrassed that Piers Morgan is a Gooner?
Darlo Debs

Deeply, would be a better word. I can see him from where I sit and his smugness radiates across the ground. If he were on fire I'd rush to my van to find some petrol to throw over him

Do you know who Herbert Chapman is, or George Graham?
gph

That’s like asking you if you know who Ron Greenwood and Bobby Moore are. Must try harder, GPH.

Did a little piece of you die when Xhaka returned to the fold despite being so openly disrespectful?.
Stubbo

Most of me, It's all about money now. Maybe they did it as a favour to Rwanda?

When SEGA sponsored Arsenal, do you think the club knew what the Italian translation of that was?

I had to Google that. Hilarious. Better suited to a Tottenham fan.

Mr Kenzo
What’s your favourite flavour of crisps?

Wotsits. Just the cheese ones.

We did used to smuggle pork scratchings into WHL and scatter them in strange places, hoping to freak out the cleaners into believing there was an anti-Semitic demon at work.

Score Prediction?

Head says Lingard will have a spring in his step and grab a couple. Heart hopes like fuck that I’m wrong. I always have a bet on the game and I’ll be going for 2-2. Lingard 1st scorer.

Favourite (short) joke?

What’s the difference between your wife and your dog?
If you lock them both in your van for 8 hours, when you open it your dog is delighted to see you.

If you could take any three players from our squad, who would you choose.

Easy. Rice, Soucek and Antonio. Can we have Lingard too?

Do you have a message to your readers of this?

Yes. Fuck off. I start my shift in the library in twenty minutes.

Many thanks to Gunner Gonzo.

I thought he was being serious until he compared Benrahma with Brooking.

Good honest stuff post match from him.

A lot of oppo fans wouldn't have been able to acknowledge the role the ref played in the outcome of the game.

Really enjoying the return of these. Cheers!

Gonzo Responds.....

I should have covered my bet with 3-3, Lingard 1st scorer!

Well, you saw both the Jekyll and the Hyde that we've been this season. I spent most of the game chewing a Laura Ashley cushion, much to my wife's annoyance, and then insistence that I replaced it (like fuck I will. I probably paid for it in the first instance).

Did you lot blow it, or did we blow it? My honest take is that the yellow Teletubby blew it on your behalf.

Literally, at one point.

I was incredibly grateful for his whistle as Lingard closed in on goal, but as a football fan, I can't explain it. It was a clear advantage to you lot.

Excellent game though and I'm delighted with the point, though personally, finishing below West Ham in the league is tantamount to being placed on the sex offenders register, only more embarrassing. But I can put up with it once in a millennium.

You have a great opportunity to take our Euro spot. In a way, I sincerely hope you do as it will give our board the kick up the arse it needs, and give my brother a hint of what it's like to be a big club - albeit momentarily.

That Benrama is a find. Has a touch of Brooking about him

You're right, Balto. I forgot that about Greenwood.

Re: View from the Opposition - Arsenal - Now with Q&A
Ron Greenwood was Assistant Manager at Arsenal from 1957 to 1961 under George Swindin.
Reg Pratt recruited him to replace Ted Fenton.

A question about Ron Greenwood would have been better than one about Herbert Chapman.

Nice one Alfs, he sounds a decent bloke, this thread makes a refreshing change to some of the toxic shite that sometimres seems to be taking over this site.

My favourite Arsenal fan is long dead.

The fourth husband of one of my aunts, I was amused by his tales of North London life in the '30s.

Particularly the revelation that they had one bath a fortnight - Highbury every other week, Municipal Baths (NOT a swimming pool) when Arsenal were away.
